Adhesion promotion via noncovalent interactions in self-healing polymers.

چکیده
Dimethylnorbornene ester (DNE) is successfully used as a noncovalent adhesion promoter. DNE was confirmed to copolymerize with dicyclopentadiene (DCPD) to yield a copolymer with better adhesion to an EPON 828 epoxy matrix relative to poly(DCPD) alone. The mechanical properties of the copolymer were comparable to that of poly(DCPD) alone. An optimized blend of the monomers was encapsulated using a urea-formaldheyde microencapsulation procedure and the resulting capsules were used for in situ self-healing experiments. Improved healing efficiency was observed for samples containing the DCPD/DNE capsules under conditions in which the monomers were efficiently polymerized.

Adhesion phenomena are essential to many biological processes and to synthetic adhesives and manufactured coatings and composites. Supramolecular interactions are often implicated in various adhesion mechanisms. Recently, supramolecular building blocks, such as synthetic DNA base-pair mimics, have drawn attention in the context of molecular recognition, self-assembly, and supramolecular polymer...
متن کاملHydrogen Bonding Modules for Use in Supramolecular Polymers
Nature utilizes a wide range of noncovalent interactions to maintain the well-defined, three-dimensional structure of key biomacromolecules, such as proteins, DNA, and RNA. Because their discrete structures are the key to their biomacromolecular function, noncovalent interactions truly underpin all biological complexity and function and, thus, life itself. Supramolecular polymer chemistry takes...

Expanding the useful lifespan of materials is becoming highly desirable, and self-healing and self-repairing materials may become valuable commodities. The formation of supramolecular materials through host-guest interactions is a powerful method to create non-conventional materials. Here we report the formation of supramolecular hydrogels and their redox-responsive and self-healing properties ...
متن کاملHelical Polyacetylenes Induced via Noncovalent Chiral Interactions and Their Applications as Chiral Materials
Construction of predominantly one-handed helical polyacetylenes with a desired helix sense utilizing noncovalent chiral interactions with nonracemic chiral guest compounds based on a supramolecular approach is described. As with the conventional dynamic helical polymers possessing optically active pendant groups covalently bonded to the polymer chains, this noncovalent helicity induction system...
متن کاملUsing bifunctional polymers presenting vancomycin and fluorescein groups to direct anti-fluorescein antibodies to self-assembled monolayers presenting d-alanine-d-alanine groups.
This paper describes the synthesis of bifunctional polyacrylamides containing pendant vancomycin (Van) and fluorescein groups, and the use of these polymers to direct antibodies against fluorescein to self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) presenting d-alanine-d-alanine (dAdA) groups. These polymers bind biospecifically to these SAMs via interactions between the dAdA and Van groups and serve as a mol...
